The Purple Elephant Project

Our Hub

Designed with our clients in mind, the Hub is a safe and nurturing environment for children and families to engage with our professional staff and volunteers. Parents and carers are welcome to drop in for a cup of something warm and comforting, a listening ear or just a place to be. Whether accessing support, attending training or curling up in our cosy corner waiting for children in sessions, we are here to welcome and support you.

For parents/Carers

We know just how hard being a parent can be, which is why we make time to listen to you. You are welcome to drop in for support or advice, information about our services or to meet the team.

Our ethos is to look after children and parents/carers by working together with you to tailor our support of direct therapeutic work, training and/or advice.

We believe an important part of looking after children, is for you to look after yourself first. We have therefore designed a space for you to kick off your shoes, put your worries aside and relax while we look after you, just for a moment.

Parents and carers of children receiving therapy will be offered regular review meetings, parenting advice and strategies relevant to your family, as we work together to achieve the best outcomes for your child.

Therapeutic Interventions

Children often find it difficult to express their feelings using words. Our age appropriate, therapeutic interventions support them to express their feelings through the safety of play.

Our services include:

Play therapy- a form of child psychotherapy which provides a way for children to express their thoughts and emotions through the medium of play rather than talking. For a child, the toys become their words and our Play Therapists work to help children explore their feelings and process their experiences through play.

Filial therapy- a Play Therapy based intervention which includes the parent or carer in the sessions, enhancing interactions and relationships, providing an understanding of the child’s world and encouraging the child to express their feelings through the safety of play.

Theraplay®- therapy focussed on enhancing attachments, improving engagement, self-esteem and trust. Based on healthy patterns of interactions between adults and children focussing on the four essential qualities of: structure, engagement, nurture and challenge. The activities are fun, interactive and very playful.

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG)- a technique aimed at supporting children and their families in understanding positive aspects of behaviour, improving their communication skills and relationships through viewing short video recordings of their interactions alongside a trained VIG guider.

Through therapy children can experience restored and deepened relationships, increased self-esteem and confidence, increased concentration, resolved traumas, reduced aggressive behaviours, fears and anxiety; allowing them to be more themselves at home and in school.
