How we can help

The Purple Elephant Project has a range of services to help

Whether you need help yourself, you are responsible for a child or young person who could benefit from our support, or if you’re a professional and would like to make a referral, we are here for you.

Support for children

Our therapeutic services support children and young people experiencing challenges such as anxiety, trauma, low confidence, emotional overwhelm or sadness.

Through creative, play-based and evidence-informed approaches, our therapists create a safe space where children and young person can explore their feelings, build resilience and develop healthy coping strategies.

We recognise that every child and young person’s experience is different. That is why we provide specialist therapeutic support tailored to each child and young person’s individual needs, helping them feel safe, understood and able to thrive.

What to expect

We offer flexible support to meet children, young people and families where they feel most comfortable.

  • At the Hub
Children and young people attend a 45 minute therapy session in our calm, creative space. While your child or young person is in session, parents and carers are welcome to wait upstairs. We offer hot or cold drinks and biscuits, and a member of our team is available if you would like to talk. You are equally welcome to take a quiet moment for yourself.

We aim to make The Hub feel welcoming and supportive for the whole family.

  • Outreach in schools
Some children and young people are seen during the school day. They are collected from class and supported in a dedicated room within their school. This allows them to access therapy in a familiar setting, without additional pressure outside of school hours.

  • Home-based therapy
For children and young people who are highly anxious or finding it difficult to engage with the outside world, therapy can take place at home. A therapist visits the family home, offering support in an environment where the child or young person feels safest. This can be particularly helpful for children or young people experiencing significant anxiety or struggling to attend school.

Nurture groups

Alongside parent and carer support, we offer nurture-based group programmes for children and young people.

These structured, relational groups focus on emotional regulation, confidence-building and positive peer connection, while keeping parents and carers involved in the journey. In small groups for 6 weeks, therapists use play-based approaches to explore feelings around low self-esteem, anxiety and friendship challenges

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How long will my child or young person need therapy for?

This varies for each child. Some children benefit from shorter-term support, while others may need longer-term therapeutic input. We regularly review progress with parents to ensure the support remains appropriate and helpful.

Sessions are child-led and adapted to your child or young person’s age and needs. Depending on the child or young person, this may include creative play, art, storytelling, games or gentle conversation. The aim is to help children and young people express and understand their emotions in a way that feels safe and natural to them.

It is completely normal for children and young people to feel unsure at first. Therapy is something new, and new experiences can feel daunting.

Our therapists work gently and at your child or young person’s pace, building trust over time. We never force a child or young person to talk before they are ready, and sessions are designed to feel safe, creative and supportive.

We will also work with you to help your child or young person feel more comfortable about attending.

We are committed to making therapy as accessible as possible. We offer a range of options, including subsidised and funded places, as well as private sessions.

Please contact us for information about fees and referral pathways, and we will be happy to talk through the options available to you.

Yes, we currently operate a waiting list due to demand for our services.

We know that reaching out for support can feel like a big step, and waiting can be difficult. Please get in touch to talk through current timeframes. We will always be honest about availability and, where possible, offer guidance or signposting while you are waiting.

Support for parents and carers

Supporting a child can sometimes feel overwhelming. You are not expected to do it alone.

At The Purple Elephant Project, we work not only with children and young people, but with the people around them.

By strengthening the support network around a child, we help create lasting, meaningful change.

You are an essential part of your child’s journey, and we are here to support you too.

Parent and carer groups

Growing stronger through play

Our 6-week group for parents and carers is designed to help you feel more confident, connected and equipped.
In small, supportive groups, you will explore how to:

  • Strengthen your relationship with your child
  • Understand behaviour and big emotions
  • Build confidence and resilience
  • Set kind, clear boundaries
  • Support everyday moments that really matter

When parents and carers feel empowered, children and young people feel safer.

Parent and carer consultancy

Sometimes, strengthening the support network begins with you.

Our parent and carer consultancy sessions offer a reflective space to explore your child or young peron’s needs, behaviour and emotional world with a qualified therapist. These sessions can help you feel more confident and better equipped to support your child or young person day-to-day.

Even small shifts at home can create meaningful change.

Parent and carer stories

Hearing from other families can be reassuring.

Our parent and carer stories share real experiences of what it is like to access support with The Purple Elephant Project, and how therapeutic work has helped their children or young person and family life.

Parent story

“When we first came to The Purple Elephant Project, we were looking for help for our daughter. What we didn’t realise was how much it would support all of us as a family.

Her therapist wasn’t just helping our child. She held us too. She was nurturing, patient and genuinely caring. You could see the difference in how our daughter responded – she began to feel safe, seen and special.

Some of the most meaningful moments came through activities we did together. Passing a ball on a blanket, simple teamwork games – they sound small, but they changed how we connected. We still say to each other, “We’re a good team,” something that started in those sessions.

Through this process, I’ve learned how to meet my daughter where she is. I’ve learned to be more nurturing and to build stronger connections with her. It wasn’t just about helping her regulate emotions, it was about helping us become the parents she needed.

Today, she is more relaxed, open and connected. And as parents, we feel more confident and better equipped to support her.

We truly felt held as a family.”

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

We understand that reaching out can come with questions. Below are some of the things families often ask us.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes, we currently operate a waiting list due to the level of need in our community.

We know that taking the step to ask for support can feel significant, and waiting can be difficult. We will always be honest about likely timeframes and, where possible, offer guidance or signposting while you are waiting.

Parents and carers are a vital part of a child’s support network.

Alongside your child or young person’s sessions, we offer regular check-ins and opportunities to reflect together. In some cases, we may suggest parent consultancy or group support to strengthen the whole family system.

When parents and carers feel supported and confident, children and young people benefit too.

Every child, young person and family is different. Some benefit from individual therapy at The Hub, others from school-based outreach, home-based support, parent and carer consultancy or group programmes.

We will take time to understand your child or young person’s needs and talk through the most appropriate option with you.

You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. We are here to help you think it through

Absolutely not! Parenting and caring can be challenging, especially when a child or young person is struggling. Reaching out for support is a sign of care and commitment, not failure.

It is also very common to feel embarrassed or worried about what others might think. Many parents and carers tell us they hesitated before getting in touch. But needing support does not mean you have done something wrong. It simply means you are navigating something difficult and want the best for your child or young person.

There is no judgement here. We work in partnership with families, helping you feel more confident and supported as you support your child or young person.
